Stump Grinding

Grind it. Move on. Plant the next thing.

A stump left in the ground is a rotting hazard for years. We grind 4 to 10 inches below grade — deep enough to replant grass, lay sod, or set hardscape on top.

How we grind a stump.

We bring out a self-propelled grinder, mark and protect surrounding irrigation and landscape lighting, then grind the stump and the surface roots until the remaining void is well below grade. The grindings get raked back into the hole (they make excellent mulch as they break down) or hauled away, your call.

For grass-grade restoration, we typically grind 4–6 inches below grade. For hardscape — patio, paver walkway, driveway — we grind 8–10 inches and excavate the larger remaining roots so nothing heaves or settles under the new surface.

What we leave behind

A workable hole — not a rotting eyesore.

  • · Stump ground below grade to your spec
  • · Surface roots ground out within ~3 ft of the stump
  • · Grindings back-filled or hauled — your choice
  • · Site cleaned of debris and sawdust
  • · Topsoil and seed available on request

Before you call

A few things help us estimate accurately.

  • · Stump diameter at ground level (rough estimate)
  • · Gate width or access path to the back yard
  • · Known utilities, sprinkler lines, or lighting nearby
  • · Whether you want grindings hauled or left
  • · What's going where the stump is now (lawn, patio, garden)
